How to stand out when you stand up

On Thursday 19th November 1863, at Gettysburg Pennsylvania, Abraham Lincoln spent two minutes, using only 271 words, making a speech which was credited with setting the course for the United States of America for the next two hundred years.

On Wednesday 30th April, at a business conference in London, a senior executive from a major corporation spent 45 minutes, using over 20 slides, making a speech about which I remember nothing at all.

Communicating in public provides us with one of the most powerful ways to have an impact on an audience, and to create a wave of change. And yet it is a skill many of us pay lip service to, or even actively avoid developing. All of the speakers I have worked with have got some benefit from focusing on their performance. And most have noticed a different reaction from the audience next time they stood up to speak.

We have worked with individuals as well as groups or teams. We have worked on specific presentations or events as well as general skills development. It is not rocket science, it’s about

  • Engaging and manage an audience
  • Creating content to support a clear message
  • Making the most of all the tools in the toolbox
  • Preparing effectively
  • Looking after your own emotional well-being
  • Becoming your own coach
